A student of university is the student studying at university (based on the Kamus BesarBahasa Indonesia). But in this era, I do disagree in that statement at all. Colleger’s duties are not studying only, but we must become a partner of society and all elements of this country to build the best future we expect.
Scholar is the faoundation of this nation which has a part and big involvement in every single decision that the government makes. Although the colleger has a huge intervention in this country but colleger is not a suvervisor for the government. Student of university just an intellectual community who has voice and right to support or against the policy of the government or the chairmen.
According to Edward Shill about colleger he categorizes the student of university as an intellectual level having the particular social responsibilities in social life. Shill mentions there are five functions of intellectual community those are createandspreadhigh culture, providingthe national charts and among nations, fostering empowerment and unity, affect social change, andplayed apolitical role.
The scholar must be susceptible to the environment around. The colleger must care about the society life and become the changer for them. We are not supposed to sit in the chair and learning in the room only without seeing what is happening around us. If we still find the colleger who just learning without caring and using the other functions as student of university, we must wake them up to walk together with us to build the realcolleger.
Student of university should not just receive every decision and keep silent when everything happens. Colleger must be active and reactive to the decision of our superintendent creats. We must move from the stagnant, unpleasant, unfair, andcompletelyunfairto thecondition which moreorganized, orderly, fair, prosperousandpowerful. It is supported by Rudolf Heberle 1968 in his teory tells that social movements refers to a wide range of collective efforts to make certain changes in social institutions orcreating a new period.
For instance in campus, when we think that we need or less of fasility of studying, our right is trying to get it. We can yell our voice by doing something that can make university official knows what we want. Although we have right of freedom to shout, but we must remember as an intelectual comunnity we must keep our manner in expressing our aspiration. Colleger is an Agent of Changed and not an anarchy demonstrant. We must do something polite, educated and have a certain character.
The campus is one of the small replicas of life in our nation for student of university to be an Agent of Change. We must uphold the truth and stand out the weak community.
According to the history of Indonesian reformation,colleger had a very huge involvement at that time. Colleger made a very big and influential achievement for Indonesia when they could depeat President Soeharto from his position so the outcome we can feel up to now.
The unresponsible and unqualified leaders will be afraid of student of university movement when the colleger reform themselves to be an Agent of Change. But this is the fact that Indonesia has right now, what we hope that the colleger as Agent of change is loosing. Many of them are afraid and does not brave to yell and shout their voice.
The quality of university student and their willing to build a welpare nation is so far away from what our former senior colleger did. Colleger nowedays does not have sensitivity anymmore for the nation. They prefer to watch their pavorite TV program than a news about their country. They more enthusiastic to play their pavorite sport than go to the street to yell ourcitizen aspiration.
As if a student of university, this is the time for us to change. We must wake up and see apparently around us. Many people need our hands, we are an Agent of Change. We must proud of being colleger and do as the preceding colleger did before.
As an Agent of change student of university is not a hero who can chase away the felon proudly and the crook will leave while our hand is clapping. Students are not merely agents of change such as the hero, the student deserved to be agents of empowerment after the changes that play a role in physical and non physical development of a nation which is then further supported with the function of social control student.
Agent of change needs a spunkiness to change. Agent of change needs togetherness to move. Agent of Change needs integrity and sincerity to sacrifice. This is we. Agent of Change is we. We must move to give the alteration to this country. Move and do it now becouse we are a student of university and we are Agent of Change.
